Actually, yes, body fat (especially around the belly) has a direct influence on the development of type 2 diabetes. The fat produces a chemical cocktail that prevents sugar-hungry cells from getting the glucose they need to properly function. As a result, the pancreas goes berserk trying to make enough insulin to counteract the chemicals, but eventually runs out of steam and produces even less.
